Boeing 737 (1967)
Boeing continues to achieve phenomenal success with the smallest member of its jetliner family. The 737 remains the best-selling jet airliner of all time and its latest variants offer unthinkable performance compared to the original model of 1967.
Boeing announced its Model 737 to a barely lukewarm reception from the airlines in 1964, yet it expects to deliver the first example of the latest iteration, the 737 MAX, late in 2017, confident in the future success of what has become the world’s best-selling jetliner. This peculiar turn of events began with the fleet renewal plans of the major U.S. carriers – American, Delta, Eastern and United – which called for a short-haul jet to replace old piston and turboprop equipment.
Boeing’s focus had been on developing the 707 and bringing the 727 to service, so that the new requirement caught it somewhat off guard, while BAC and Douglas, with the One-Eleven and DC-9, respectively, were poised to take orders. And they did, American signing for One-Elevens, while Delta ordered DC-9s. Boeing had yet to launch an airliner programme against anything other than a U.S. order, but the 737 impressed neither Eastern nor United and instead it took a Lufthansa order for 21 aircraft.
Still Boeing yearned for a domestic buyer and after Eastern ordered DC-9s, it offered to cover United’s immediate short-haul needs with 727s, leased on favourable terms until the 737 became available. United committed to 40, with 30 options, and Boeing began work in earnest.
